Reading Mathematics

“Communication is an essential part of mathematics and mathematics education. To achieve communication skills, students must read, write and speak about mathematics.”


1) Skim the material before you read.
i) Consider the assignment before reading (“What should I learn by reading this?”)
ii) Skim the beginning and the end of the chapter (Chapter opener, Summary)
iii) Skim the lesson assigned (Vocabulary, Big idea, headings, terms in bold, questions in Covering the Ideas)
2) Read actively and analytically
i) Read carefully
-Read slowly, paying attention to each word and symbol
- Look up the meaning of any word you do not understand
-Reread sections that are unclear
ii) Read with a pencil in hand and notebook open
-Take notes
-Work examples yourself as you follow the steps in the text
3) Review the material
i) Identify key concepts
ii) Study heading and key terms
iii) Review the Covering the Ideas questions
iv) Discuss difficult ideas
